With globalization slowing down after the global financial crisis in 2008 and especially after the breakout of the war in Ukraine, the world is seeing the rise of fragmentation and geopolitical tensions. In this era of increasing uncertainty and volatility, a number of countries are dramatically increasing military spending amid heightened security concerns and anxiety.
Traditionally, nationalism has been a prominent value in education in almost every country in the modern world. But in today’s circumstances the emphasis on nationalism in education tends to be particularly strengthened in most countries.

Traditionally, nationalism has been a prominent value in education in almost every country in the modern world. But in today’s circumstances the emphasis on nationalism in education tends to be particularly strengthened in most countries.

Global citizenship recognizes a sense of belonging to a common humanity and stresses the importance of solidarity and cooperation beyond national boundaries toward a more just and peaceful world. In recent years, the international community has stepped up efforts to mainstream global citizenship education in all levels and forms of education. So the question arises as to how we can deal with the rise of nationalism in education and whether we can harmonize nationalism and global citizenship in education. The present session will bring together several experts in the Asia-Pacific region to attempt to address these questions.
