This session explores the potential of participatory approaches to research in bolstering ethical considerations of knowledge, people, and social advancement, both at an international and local level. The session will shed light on the shortcomings of existing ethical research boards and prompt broader reflections on the purpose and responsibilities of research ethics. This is also evidenced through misconceptions and lack of understanding on the spirit of working with society and community members as part of public advocacy and knowledge development process. All these issues can be concluded in one specific discussion on ethics of community based research. Key questions include: What should research ethics aim to achieve? How can it foster relationships, accountability, and mutual knowledge building for reliable and impactful outcomes? By emphasising the need for robust ethical frameworks and practices, the session aims to stimulate meaningful dialogue and action to ensure that research respects the rights and dignity of all involved parties.
