Emboldening Democratic Pedagogies About Media and Justice Through Critical Media Literacy and Peer Teaching

This session explores practical techniques for integrating critical media literacy as a pedagogical tool to co-create democratic education with undergraduate students. The presenters will use storytelling and artifact-based examples to illustrate how students designed and facilitated lessons for their peers, encouraging them to critically analyze and address social and environmental injustice issues that concerned them. This conversation will provide detailed insights into how peer teachers guided their classmates in challenging problematic media representations and collaboratively creating alternative media texts through in-person, hybrid, and in remote learning contexts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants will receive resources to adapt critical media literacy and peer teaching in their own learning environments.
