The Indigenous concept of biophilia, or, the love for nature and non-human beings (Cajete, 1999b) is especially relevant today in light of our concern for the earth’s well-being. Indigenous peoples’ connection to the Land is a symbol of connection to the spirit of life itself, shedding light on Indigenous historical traditions, environmental practices, a relational sense of place and educational applications. Forgetting our original instructions and the phenomenon of bio-phobia has contributed to the dysfunction of modern relationships to the natural world. The oral passing on of knowledge through our creation story illustrates who we are, where we come from, and our human responsibilities for Lands and Waters.
Panel presenters will share their lived experiences and work for Lands and Waters to honour our original instructions from Gzhimnidoo/Kind Spirit. Symposium participants will engage with story to wonder and make meaningful connections to the theme: Peace, Culture and Social Justice.
